In a small Zealand village, where everything seems to be idyllic, lives the seamstress Bolette Jensen, a bold woman who has had her share of bitter experiences and is now feared for her sharp tongue. Bolette tends to speak her mind without mincing words, and since the truth is, as is well known, unheard of, she is not particularly liked by the parish authorities, the most prominent of whom is the parish council chairman Peter Enevoldsen. Bolette is given a serious task when the young, beautiful Sofie is about to have a baby, and Bolette immediately takes care of the unhappy girl and promises that she will probably walk up the aisle with her Karl.

Due to his gambling addiction, farmer Hans Sværke has brought his farm to the brink of bankruptcy, thereby opening up the opportunity for the wealthy landowner Karius to achieve his goal of taking over the farm. However, parish bailiff Mikkelsen vouches for Sværke and saves him for the time being, and Sværke then leases the farm. Sværke dies, and his talented son Niels takes over the lease. The plot is nothing new: it's what is done with it that pleases the eye and ear. Ingen tid til Kaertegn was one of the more popular entries in the 1957 Berlin Film Festival.

A romantic comedy about Ingrid, the innkeeper's daughter, and Karsten, the landowner, who are in love. Ingrid's father is strongly opposed to the relationship because of an event that took place 40 years ago – and the estate's financial problems don't exactly help matters. Then three very different people arrive at the inn. The poet Ole, the Supreme Court lawyer Aagesen, and the record producer Blanquet. With their help, the landowner solves his financial problems and wins Ingrid's heart.
