A story of a first love between two recent high school graduates who meet one another evening before start of the WWII.

His acquaintance with the Bolshevik Zinchenko largely determines Sergei's attitude to the political situation in Russia on the eve of the revolution. The hero joins the Bolshevik sailors and stands up to defend Sevastopol from the Provisional Government.

Kolya Chimbartsev arrived at the boarding school of the port of Krasin from distant Odesa. He is to be met by his hydrologist father.
