Jan-Erik Widgren meets the lonely Bertha Olsson, a woman struggling with alcoholism. Though Bertha is already linked to Caligula, Jan-Erik's heartless teacher, she begins a relationship with the boy anyway. When Caligula learns that Jan-Erik is having an affair with Bertha, he begins to torture his student psychologically. He reserves his cruelest behavior for Bertha, however, which results in a tragic turn of events.

A travelling theater-company performs Offenbach's "The Beautiful Helene" when an officer in the audience notices the similarity in appearance between the leading actor Leonard Pettersson and the king Charles XV. With Pettersson dressed as the king and the other actors as the royal suite, they all go to Herrsunda castle where the officer is trying to make an impression on his fiance.

Lisa Larsson, dancer at a theater, witnesses a traffic accident and banker Brenner's private driver asks her to be a witness. When her friends see her talk to the driver, they start to believe that she is Brenner's fiancée. The manager of the theater, Gravander, gives her the leading part in his latest show, in order to befriend Brenner. The sculptress Tora Diidiken is married to the sculptor Gunnar Grahn and they both compete in a contest to design a statue for the public square in Hicksville.

The chamberlain Carl Johan Stjärna is a poor aristocrat who has to resort to borrowing money from his manservant Frans to afford champagne and restaurant visits. Frans has told his fiance Irene that he is an aristocrat which leads to some complications, not least because Irene has told Frans she is a rich land owner's daughter, although she is in a housemaid.

Young woman Marta dreams of a better future and leaves her parent's cabbage patch and move to Stockholm. Waiting tables doesn't pay nearly enough and she soon finds herself working the streets. Her teenage sweetheart Adrian also moves to Stockholm to search for her. Plot by Mattias Thuresson.

The ladies man Georg is finally about to get married, but a misunderstanding lead to his new wife break up the wedding.

The farmer Per Jonsson doesn't think too well about the factory in the neighborhood, since he thinks that it destroys the fishing and makes the young people leave the countryside. When the workers at the factory go on strike, they ask him to sell milk to them and let them work in his forest. But Jonsson is stubborn and refuses to give them any help at all. At least until he is in an accident and also need help.
