A widowed conductor rediscovers love when he meets a young woman from the countryside, but doubts about his music make him question his competence and distance himself from the woman he loves.
Daniel is a psychic who can see the past and predict the future. As a child, he had a vision that his brother-in-law, João Henrique, was cheating on his sister, Ester, which led her to separate from her husband. As an adult, his psychic abilities increase and Daniel uses them for his own benefit, rather than to help people. He sets up a practice and appears on TV, becoming famous and known as “the Prophet.” Daniel begins to grow rich, important, and cold.
César, a sugar mill owner in Pernambuco, lives in Rio de Janeiro with his wife Maria Luiza and daughters, Débora and Suzy. One day, tired of his life, he decides to fake his own death and assume another identity. César does this with the help of França, the financial director of the sugar mill – which also belongs to Alaor. César and França stage a car accident, plunging off Avenida Niemeyer in Rio and disappearing into the sea. Ferdinando, a bank employee who came from the north and prospered, buys a car and starts to frequent the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. He meets Lucia, with whom he falls in love, to the point of selling his own car to pay the girl's bill, who says she is very rich and lives in a mansion, but it's all a farce.
