Os Ossos do BarĂŁo is a Brazilian telenovela produced by SBT and originally broadcast from April 28 to September 8, 1997. It is an adaptation of Jorge Andrade's 1963 play of the same name, adapted for television by Walter George Durst, with collaboration from Duca Rachid, Mário Teixeira, and Marcos Lazarini. The telenovela stars Ana Paula ArĂłsio, TarcĂsio Filho, Juca de Oliveira, Othon Bastos, and Leonardo Villar. Set in SĂŁo Paulo in 1948, the story follows Egisto Ghirotto, the wealthy son of Italian immigrants who dreams of gaining social prestige by marrying his son, Martino, to Isabel, the great-granddaughter of the late Baron of Jaraguá. Their romance sparks a bitter conflict between a rising immigrant family and a declining aristocratic dynasty, exposing themes of class, ambition, tradition, and the social transformation of Brazil.
Four teenagers, each facing a major conflict. MajĂ´, the daughter of separated parents, has fallen in love with her mother Raquel’s husband, the teacher TĂşlio. CaĂto, who is gay, lives in a dysfunctional home where his parents' marriage—Dirceu and Marilu’s—is going from bad to worse. Doca is a drug addict, and his sister Bia has become pregnant by her boyfriend, Michel. Their parents, Odilon and Paula, are deeply unhappy as well. Interwoven with their stories is that of TĂşlio—a former addict turned upstanding teacher—who encounters a haunting figure from his past: his ex-sister-in-law, Fernanda.
In the Brazilian countryside, poor sharecroppers join a messianic group led by Joaquim, who believes he is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Gaining power over the peasants, he begins to persecute those who do not pay absolute obeisance.
Chief of Police Rui, a happily married man of principles, is in charge of investigating Joana, a teacher who's accused of political crimes. After some false starts, he manages to arrest her, but is startled to learn that she's also a nun. The revelation doesn't alter the natural course of events: he must torture her in order to obtain a confession, and gets increasingly attracted to her.
