Marie Pasque, known as Simplette, lives in an uneventful life in her Provence village. Her godmother, Madame Rouvière, is fond of her and desires only that she marries her nephew, Robert. When she dies, Rouvière leaves her fortune to Robert on the condition that he takes Marie as his wife. Unfortunately, Robert is already in love with an actress. To save his company from financial ruin, Robert is forced to marry Marie, but as soon as he has received the first half of the inheritance he returns to his former mistress. Marie is still in love with Robert, and she uses the other half of Madame Rouvière's inheritance to help her husband's company survive another financial crisis. When he hears of this, Robert decides to return to Marie but he arrives too late.

The bright junior lieutenant Jacques Mareuil, son of an admiral, is stationed in one of our great military ports, and is neighbors with the young Suzie Darvel, who has opted for a career as an opera singer. Having a great knowledge of music himself, the navy officer, who finds the girl’s voice quite interesting, writes her a melody, making it a gift to her. That same day, he receives orders to set sail, putting an end to the beautiful love story which had just begun. Three years later, junior lieutenant Jacques Mareuil returns to Paris. While attending a performance of Carmen, he recognizes the interpreter of the Bizet character as his lovely neighbor from the past. Jacques Mareuil falls in love with the great singer and wants to marry her. His father is however categorically opposed to the decision, and with the aid of one his colleagues at the Naval Department, he obtains an immediate departure to Indochina for Jacques.

A manuscript delivered to a playhouse is eventually turned into a major hit with critics and audience alike. The only problem is that no one knows who wrote it. The actress of the play receives a call from the author and the two quickly becomes friends, but the man won't give any details about himself- He has a secret.

Based on the dutch paintings of lacemakers of the same time - the film depicts a poor woman's strive for money to be able to marry her beloved; doing so by entering a local lacing competition.

Leonce Perret brings home a present for wife Suzanne Grandais. It turns out to be point guards for hat pins. Hat pins with such guards have been outlawed. She is disappointed and refuses to use them. When Leonce seem to get a pin prick in her eye, she is upset. When she discovers he is faking, she decides on her own revenge.
