After his handler is killed, police dog Rex teams up with recently-divorced inspector Richard Moser to investigate crimes and solve mysteries on the streets of Vienna. And they sometimes get help from their two-legged friend, Inspector Stockinger.

Stockinger is an Austrian-made police television drama, with fourteen 45-minute episodes first aired from 1996 to 1997. The series is a spin-off from the popular Austrian television drama Inspector Rex, and focuses on Ernst Stockinger, one of the original members of the Homicide division or Mordkommission in German. Stockinger leaves the series to return to Salzburg where his wife has inherited a dental practice from her late father . He is appointed a Bezirksinspektor at the Landes Gendarmerie, sharing an office with District Inspector Antonella Simoni. Unlike the members of the team in 'Rex', who appear to be self-directed and are seldom seen to answer to senior management, Stockinger reports to Dr Brunner, a philosophising burecratic senior police inspector. Stockinger is portrayed as a clumsy, almost Inspector Clouseau-like character, driving a clapped-out 1973 VW Variant, but single-minded when following up clues.

Former detective Brenner has become an ambulance driver and finds himself, much to his dismay, caught up in a war between two rival first aid organizations.

After a bank robbery in the heart of Vienna, the cunning small-time crook Chester takes refuge with the childlike, naive stamp dealer Herbert. A very bad choice, as Herbert destroys all of his prey due to his clumsiness. Chester, with underworld capo Otto breathing down his neck, is devastated. Then he finds out that Herbert's only relative, Aunt Hertha, has taken out generous life insurance for her nephew and sees his money worries solved. The way there: an adventurous plan.

Not only is his beloved wife, Christine, traveling the world, leaving him alone with the household, but a new murder case is keeping Gasperlmaier on his toes. At the annual Pfeiffer's Day, where he is about to enjoy a fine schnapps with station commander Friedrich Kahlß, a scream shatters the peaceful atmosphere.

To their big surprise, the capable waitress Gundula Kirchner receives from the estate owner Xaver Schönborn the offer to manage his stud as managing director. Gundula, who has some qualifications, seizes the opportunity and has the business under control after only a short time. The murdered man was last seen at the Altaussee Ski Club's fish dinner. Gasperlmaier and his new wife, Doctor Jolante Roth, suspect the murderer is among the guests. Time is running out, because a second terrible murder follows.

Gasperlmaier doesn't have it easy: A mysterious phone call leads him to Loser, where the bodies of two women become his latest murder case. While Gasperlmaier battles his fear of heights and his weak stomach, he and Dr. Weiss from the Liezen District Police Command face ever more controversial questions.
