After his wife passes away, the ailing Akbar marries Tina, a widow. Akbar’s illness makes him lose his job so Tina has to work in a garment factory. Akbar’s effort to find a job is fruitless and he passes away shortly after. His three children Mimi, Memet, and Ayu cannot stand their stepmother’s fickleness. They leave quietly to find the family of their biological mother. This is not easy since they don’t have her address. They work at any job to survive - housemaid, shoe shiner, parking boy etc. One day they meet John who buys and sells used newspapers. Mimi and Memet are given a small business of selling ice and pastries. Then Memed accidently takes the wrong train but fortunately, a rich man adopts him. However, Memed returns home as he misses his younger siblings. The reunion is short since Ayu passes away.

Even though he has become successful with many fans, Rhoma remains modest, is still religious and listens to his parents. But Ida, a fan of his, has been sending more than 100 letters to him. Rhoma sympathises with her and falls in love. Meanwhile, Ida’s mother is a poor widow who sells gado-gado (traditional Indonesian salad). Rhoma does not like Mira’s "modern" attitude. When Mira has an accident and Ida helps her, her attitude changes, and Ida and Rhoma end up marrying each other.

But Rhoma, son of a poor widow, often sings his self-composed songs there, as he is still unemployed. A friend suggests that he should go to a recording company. He succeeds and his songs are hits. Then Heri falls in love with Ani, Rhoma’s girlfriend. So he conspires with the friends that he often gambles with at the eatery, and when Rhoma tries to help a hostess who has been killed, he is instead accused as the murderer and jailed. In the end, the true murderer is discovered, and Rhoma and Ani can be together again.

Kabayan is influenced by a friend to go to the city. In the city, a girl, Saribanon, whose father has been helped by Kabayan when he is robbed, secretly falls in love with him. But he already has Iteung, his girlfriend in the village. The story of that relationship, combined with his adventure in the city, finally ends with Iteung and Kabayan’s marriage.

For disturbing public order, a group of breakdancing teenagers are arrested by the police. Hence, Chicha’s father forbids her to breakdance and Chicha’s boyfriend, Rico, is asked to go his own way. Then parents and teenagers meet to discuss the issue. Chicha continues to breakdance and is even planning a show with her friends. Initially, her father opposes this but finally changes his mind after he sees the successful show. Almost half of the film consists of breakdancing scenes that were popular and polemical in the news at that time.

Rhoma is too preoccupied with his music, which makes his wife, Ani, feel neglected. Then Ani falls ill and suffers from blindness. Concerned for his wife’s condition, Rhoma leaves his music and starts to look after livestock in the village instead. Pursuing a business that he knows little about is difficult. Then other farmers dislike the competition he represents that leads to disputes and fights. Finally, Rhoma decides to return to the music world.

Rhoma Irama and his Soneta Group visit various regions to preach religion. He receives both warm welcomes and accusations of commercialising religion. This challenge becomes Rhoma’s struggle. He tries to persuade his fellow professionals to avoid drinking and women. He also manages to help his future father-in-law who almost rapes Laila, his own daughter, in a drunken state. Despite opposition from the Al Muthainah college, Rhoma manages to convince them that music can be used as a means of preaching. Rhoma sings no less than seven preachy dangdut songs in this film.

When Abah eventually agrees, Kabayan refuses. To make Kabayan change his mind, Abah forbids Kabayan seeing Iteung, Abah's daughter who's also Kabayan's girlfriend.

Kabayan undergoes a long journey to get his soul mate, Nyi Iteung, since Abah, the latter’s father, does not agree to have a son-in-law from the village. Kabayan has to go to the city to find his luck, assisted by his friend, Joni Kemod and his master, Nora Nori. Now, Kabayan, as a city person, is coming home to propose to Nyi Iteung. The film ends with Abah's acceptance of Kabayan for what he is.

Rhoma is a successful musician, while his elder brother, Dendy, is a successful engineer. Then Rhoma starts a relationship with Rika, the daughter of Alwi, who is the best friend of Rhoma’s father, Hadi. One day, Hadi comes to ask Alwi for Rika’s hand in marriage. Rika mistakenly thinks that proposal comes from Rhoma, but it is Dendy who is proposing. Rhoma, who is currently having a show out of town, is very happy to hear about his brother’s engagement. He decides to rush home, even when his contract with the show has not yet completed. But Rhoma gets into an accident and loses his sight. So when he meets Rika, who has changed her name to Mira, he does not recognise her, not even from her voice. When Rhoma is recovering at the end of his treatment, Rika runs away. When she crosses the street, she is hit by a car and dies. Rhoma is there to witness it all.

Along with her lover, a secretary plots to rob and murder her boss and his family.
