A little girl is told by her parents that she is adopted. Determined to find her birth mother, her family eventually agrees to take her to Sri Lanka, where they encounter the militant group known as the Tamil Tigers.

Narayanappa, a Madhwa Brahmin man, dies in the Agrahara of the village Durvasapura. As per Madhwa customs, his last rites must be performed at the earliest. However, due to Narayanappa's rebellious actions in life, which included eating meat, consuming liquor and marrying a prostitute, there is disagreement amongst the Brahmins of the village as to who will perform his rites.

To honour his mother's final wish, Ananthan returns to his ancestral village from America and attempts to light a lamp at the family temple. However, his quest is thwarted by an evil magician named Digambaran who seeks to harness the temple's hidden powers.

The movie explores the cultural problems experienced by an American woman, newly married to an Indian, adjusting to Indian norms and customs. It depicts a modern man who studies agriculture in the United States, returns to India with an American wife with their different views. The theme is one alienation from the fellow human beings.

Keshu is a deaf and dumb boy who lost his mother when he was born. He was raised by his maternal uncle and wife. Being mischievous, there were many complaints against Keshu by the villagers.
