Jan, the café pianist, comes from the countryside. The talented boy was taken care of by an old organist. Jan then studied at the conservatory, where he made friends with Paweł, an undisciplined but very talented composer. Paweł's works gain publicity abroad, but he himself, unable to bear human envy and accept the loss of his beloved girl, commits suicide ... Jan's father dies, and soon his mother ...

A penal gymnastics session is underway during a roll call in a concentration camp. A brutal voice shouts furious commands: "nieder - auf!" (down – up!). One of the prisoners will not obey the commands, another one will almost survive

Józef comes to his hometown on the anniversary of the murder of his father - a peasant activist, and explores the circumstances of his death.

Zofia is an elderly woman living in an retirement home. Separate from the rest, she talks seldom and then only about visiting her daughter's family for Christmas. When she comes to her daughter's home unannounced, her stay is spoiled by the damage to her son-in-law doctorate bookmarks which she removed unknowingly during dusting. She then spends Christmas in an empty restaurant, surrounded by waiters and musicians waiting to be tipped.

A swarm of locusts teases a herd of horses. A four-wheeled vehicle drives into the herd. It pulls behind its riders, the horses, and the insects. The gallop is more and more dynamic, gravediggers prepare coffins for crazy drivers.

Lonely, old parents living on a small farm look forward to their son's visit. The man finally shows up one day, but he separates himself from his parents with a newspaper. Inadvertently, he drops a slice of bread. His father picks it up respectfully.

A public toilet cleaner dreams of a bird seen in a cage at the exhibition. She lives a modest, austere life and saves money obsessively. On the day of the purchase, she takes the bird outside in a box and sets it free.

A man goes through his solitary morning routine, then has an accident.

The film is a praise of human willingness to take on the endless challenges of fate. The loaf of bread a prisoner receives each day is used to patch thousands of holes in the cell walls. They are inhabited by nerve-wracking busy insects that flit constantly from hole to hole. When the work is finished, the prisoner is unexpectedly transferred to another cell. The new loaf of bread held in his hands freezes dramatically halfway to his mouth: the walls of this cell are also strewn with thousands of holes.

Presenting a different approach to life, the three brothers meet at their father's funeral.

Different shades of responsibility. A mother drowns her blind unhappy child. She wants to spare him the burden of being a cripple. She is absolved by a priest, but the police are waiting for her in front of the church.
