"Snub" and his much larger dancing partner, "Fat" (Marvin Loback), struggle with each other in the room they share, try to crash the local vaudeville house and end up having to repossess a piano from their former landlord.
At the Sans Scruples Hotel, the house fire inspector has to steer clear of a vamp and her jealous husband, and put out a fire to win the girl.
In this film, Snub leaves his extremely tiny town to go live with his aunt, who he doesn't even know. He arrives at her house when she's throwing a party and she doesn't want to invite him inside...until she learns he owns an oil well. Then she encourages him to meet and become smitten with her daughter. However, Snub isn't that interested in this vamp and instead is interested in the maid. But due to their persistence, Snub finally agrees to marry the cousin--at which point the maid hatches a plan to expose the ruse and a silent comedy chase ensues.
The storm, which takes up most of the second reel, is a trial run for the storm sequence in The Wizard Of Oz which Semon would make in 1925. Fox released a comedy that was an exact copy of Lightning Love just before the Semon film was due to come out. Albert E. Smith noticed the similarities and on September 5, 1923 attempted to have the Fox film pulled from the exhibitors.

Paul, a great college athlete, is sent to his uncle's farm to be developed, but turns against the continual round of chores. And at the table he is continually elbowed aside by the huskier farmhands, until he gives up in disgust. But a last attempt to understand the intricacies of the tractor results in his demolishing the house, and the farmer's daughter aids his escape.
Edward Everett Horton and Ruth Dwyer are in love and expect to get married as soon as one of them mentions it to the other. In the meantime, Lolita Lee accepts Horton's proposal, which he doesn't recall making, and Miss Dwyer is invited to be a bridesmaid. So he tells Miss Dwyer that it's Stanley Taylor she's marrying, and hopes no one spills the beans before Taylor shows up in a false beard to spike the proceedings.
Snub comes to town with his pet duck where people think that he has struck oil at home, and so is briefly pursued by the young women, before settling on Thelma Daniels.

A boxer offers $50 to anyone who can stay in the ring with him for an entire minute. Larry, through a series of mix-ups--including hitting the boxer in the face with a tomato--winds up in the ring with him but, with the aid of some strategically placed horseshoes, manages to knock the boxer out. When he comes to and finds out what happened, the outraged boxer sets out after Larry.
Magnolia Milkshake, having a husband who is exempted because of possessing a disease which might be called "too much fat" is desirous of helping the boys across the ferry mop up Bill Hohenzollern's place, tries very hard to join the Red Cross. After various tests she is finally rejected. Since this plan didn't work out she decides to join the kaiser-killers herself and so enters the recruiting station right next door. Here she is again rejected because of a flat head. Having failed twice she goes home feeling that she needs a little training and uses poor delicate little hubby as the goat. While Magnolia is still hard at work training with some dummies, hubby gets a note from Nicholas Nutmeg inviting him to a game of poker, but also inviting his little bank roll. Magnolia sees the note, becomes furious, and here follow some lively chases which end with hubby in jail and Magnolia trying hard to enlist in the army.
After many difficulties getting into a baseball game with his girl, Paul is pressed into service as a pinch hitter.
