Biography
José Estívalis Cabo, más conocido por sus pseudónimos Armand Guerra y José Silavitse, director de cine, escritor y periodista español, de ideología anarquista. De padres campesinos, fue monaguillo e ingresó en un seminario, que abandonó transformándose en anticlerical. Trabajó como tipógrafo en Valencia y participó en huelgas de la CNT. Encarcelado, huyó a Francia y a Suiza y contactó con círculos anarquistas, como el Germinal deGinebra. Estuvo después en Italia, Egipto, Atenas, Constantinopla, Constanza, Belgrado, Salónica... Escribe en Tierra y Libertad de Barcelona. Participa en la Semana trágica. Escribe también en francés e italiano en otras publicaciones con el pseudónimo José Silavitse (su apellido al revés) (Le Reveil e Il Risveglio). Traduce textos anarquistas del alemán y del francés. En París y en Berlín empieza a dirigir cine y a trabajar también como actor bajo el pseudónimo Armand Guerra. Estallada la Guerra Civil, participa en ella fundamentalmente en La Mancha. Sobre esa experiencia filma Carne de fieras (1936) y escribe A través de la metralla. Escenas vividas en los frentes y en la retaguardia (1937). Con una hija en París, se exilia al acabar la guerra y fallece en París a causa de un aneurisma en 1939.

Flesh of the Beast
A re-enactment of the Jules Durand case. In 1910, Jean Jaurès [leader of the French socialist movement] took the lead in defending a working-class coal miner, Jules Durand, accused of complicity in and condemned to death for the murder of a labor leader. As in the Dreyfus Affair, a false dossier had been used to convict Durand. Jaurès argued that the memory of the Dreyfus Affair saved Durand, calling the case the working class’s Dreyfus Affair.

Miseries of the Needle
"La Commune" ( The Commune ) (1914) is a good example of Herr Guerra's peculiarities. It was produced by "Cinéma Du Peuple" ( People's Cinema ), a film cooperative supported by workers, and depicts the beginnings of the Commune of Paris, that working class uprising that briefly ruled and caused a mess during two months in the city of Paris in the year of 1871.
