A group of friends who grew up together were separated after a building that collapsed changed their fates forever. When they meet again many years later, their identities have become very different that it is difficult to distinguish between friend or foe, yet they continue to struggle between justice and friendship.
During the late reign of the Qing dynasty skilled physician To Chung is named the new Imperial Palace Physician when he successfully heals Empress Dowager Chee Hei from her illness. To Chung eventually grows close to the Gwong-seoi Emperor who is under house arrest at the Forbidden City and stripped of his powers after angering Dowager Chee Hei due to losing the First Sino-Japanese War and rebelling against her authority. To Chung also heals Gwong-seoi Emperor from his illness and helps the young emperor with his relationship with Consort Tsan. However how great he is as a physician to the imperial family, To Chung cannot heal his crippled wife Hung Bak-hap. Desperate to heal his wife he seeks out the services of bone-setter Fuk Ling. Fuk Ling's treatments help Bak-hap relieve some of her pain. Impress by Fuk Ling, To Chung refers her to the Forbidden City where she becomes Empress Dowager Chee-hei personal bone-setter. To Chung and Fuk Ling's friendship eventually turns romantic but his loyalty to his wife Bak-hap prevents him from further pursuing his romance interest in Fuk Ling. Fuk Ling, however, has ulterior motives for getting close to the imperial family as she has been tasked to kill the Gwong-seoi Emperor.
Yau Tat and Yip Fai Ting became high school friends due to a cycling competition, but lost contact with each other after Yip Fai Ting had to return to Taiwan for family reasons. Years later, they meet again at an accounting firm. Yau Tat's boss, Ling Hei, likes to play office politics and often drives a wedge between colleagues. It causes a grudge between Yau Tat and Yip Fai Ting. Fortunately, the secretary Wu Sam Lam is very considerate and encouraging towards Yau Tat. His mother, Yau Wing Ci wants to make them a couple, but Yau Tat does not want to start a relationship because of his family burdens. This is until he meets Yeung Gwong, who happens to be Yip Fai Ting's childhood friend and a fellow accountant. However, Yau Tat is hesitant to move forward because of Yip Fai Ting's feelings for Yeung Gwong. In addition, dealing with the office politics on a daily basis makes them lose sight of their goals in life. Finally, Yau Tat and Yip Fai Ting decide to put aside everything and return to the cycling track to rediscover their fighting spirit and friendship.
