Produced for television by Claude-Jean Philippe, the « Encyclopédie audiovisuelle du cinéma », recounts the history of French cinema from its birth to the beginning of the 1960s. With commentary read by Jean Rochefort.

A group of French soldiers, including the patrician Captain de Boeldieu and the working-class Lieutenant Maréchal, grapple with their own class differences after being captured and held in a World War I German prison camp. When the men are transferred to a high-security fortress, they must concoct a plan to escape beneath the watchful eye of aristocratic German officer von Rauffenstein, who has formed an unexpected bond with de Boeldieu.

A final scene shows stars arriving at a film premiere, including Jean Harlow, Norma Shearer and Wallace Beery.

While initially appearing to be a tragic or natural death, it is eventually revealed to be an intentional act of mercy. The investigation into his death forces a sweeping confrontation that reveals hidden truths, passionate devotion, and profound sacrifice within the family.
