The film depicts events between the Fashoda crisis in 1898 and the 1904 signing of the Entente Cordiale creating an alliance between Britain and France and ending their historic rivalry. It was based on the book King Edward VII and His Times by André Maurois. It was made with an eye to its propaganda value, following the Munich Agreement of September 1938 and in anticipation of the outbreak of a Second World War which would test the bonds between Britain and France in a conflict with Nazi Germany.

In late 19th century France, the Countess Louise, wife of a wealthy general, sells the earrings her husband gave her on their wedding day to pay off her secret debts, then claims to have lost them. Her husband quickly learns of the deceit, which is the beginning of many tragic misunderstandings, all involving the earrings, the general, the countess, and her new lover, the Italian Baron Donati.

Hélène and Aldo Giovanni are a circus trapeze double act and a couple. Aldo is temporarily replaced by former-partner Alexandre when the former is injured. The two get into a fight and the following day Alexandre is discovered dead. Hélène suspects her husband is responsible for the murder.

The aunt of Alfred Puc, a meek tax-collector in Paris, dies while riding in a moving van. Alfred, being the heir of a rich lady, begins a frantic search to locate the missing van and the cupboard because one can't claim an inheritance if there is no 'corpus delecti.' In his search, he gets caught up in an underworld web and finds the body of a murdered gangster in his room. He finally locates the cupboard but promptly loses it again. But, wait, it isn't "finis' time, yet.

One Christmas Eve, a carefree young man, Eric, arrives in a small provincial town. Here, he meets Julien, a bar pianist who is his exact double. Julien is in love with Marinette, a pretty waitress, but he is too shy to make any romantic overtures. Eric decides to give the course of true love a helping hand by pretending to be Julien. Meanwhile, Eric’s fabulously wealthy uncle has sent his minions out to bring him back home, so that he may celebrate Christmas in the bosom of his family.

King Michel VIII is still a child, but when revolution threatens, the young monarch's entourage lies to him and even tries to get rid of him.

Sarkani, an adventurer, finds a trusted carrier pigeon, takes possession of the code message and, teaming up with the unscrupulous banker Torenthal, gets the position of secretary from Matthias Sandorff. After deciphering the message, he discovers a conspiracy against the government. By law, Thorenthal and Sarkani receive half of Sandorff's fortune. His kidnapped daughter was raised by Thorenthal as his own child, and in order to keep her share of the fortune, he tries to marry her off to Sarkani, but she is in love with the son of one of Sandorff's friends and refuses. Sandorff takes over the fisherman who betrayed him, as well as the banker who lost his fortune in Monte Carlo. Together with Sava's beloved, whom he cured, they save Sava and take Sarkani into their own hands. Sandorf surrenders them to the legitimate authorities, unites his daughter and her lover, and everyone lives happily on the island of Zord.

An Alsatian, head of a section of the Gestapo, is actually spying on behalf of the French and dismantling a Nazi network. His activities are brought to light by the Germans and he owes his life only to the intervention of a young woman.

A young man arrives on an African island where he falls in love with the queen of a tribe, a beautiful singer. He takes her to Paris, but on the night of her stage debut, she faints, frightened. He returns with her to her island and settles there permanently.
