Subhendu Chatterjee

The film documents one of the largest Indian religious fairs, the Kumbh Mela, which is held at the confluence of the rivers Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati. The action is seen through the eyes of Shubhendu Chatterjee who has come to the Mela not out of any religious sentiment but to see and understand people and seek the reason why “….multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining.” (Mark Twain after visiting the 1895 Mela)

Ashoke Gupta is an idealistic doctor working in a town near Calcutta. He discovers that the water at a popular temple is the source of an outbreak of typhoid and hepatitis. A Hindu government serviceman comes to a Muslim colony along with his wife, daughter Mou and son Raju. His wife is an anti-Islam fanatic. There are lives Sirajuddin Mohammad loves Raju and Mou. This film is a complex family drama based on the theme of a mother's immense love and sacrifice. The story is based on a boy called Bikram who was locally knows as Loafer. Once he helped one of his friend Bhashkar to get marry to his lover for which he was intitially arrsted. But his elder brother Rajib gave him bail. Loafer Bikram was a very helpful person but due to his attitude he was hated his entire family. Rajib's wife was always against him but she forgot that once when Loafer Bikram brought medicine at midnight breaking down the shutters of the store for her child, for which Loafer Bikram was arrested. In the mean while he fell in love with a girl called Tina whose father was a rich businessman. He disagreed with the realtionship of Tina with Loafer Bikram. Meanwhile Bikram's sister's marriage was fixed and an amount of rupees two lakh was needed. Loafer Bikram was offered some money by Tina's father to break his relationship with his daughter.

‘Preyashi’ is Sukanta’s story. Sukanta gives shelter to his father’s friend Bhudhar and his daughter Nandini. Sukanta and Nandini fall in love. Sukanta gets a job and goes out of station. But when he gets no news of Nandini and her father, he comes back and hears of Budhar’s death. Sukanata keeps searching Nandini but in vain. He gets transferred to Delhi where he catches Mr. Ganguly for corruption in railways. Nandini turns out to be Ganguly’s wife and begs Sukanta to set him free. Sukanta lies in court to save Ganguly. But he is shattered and becomes alcoholic. He meets Ranu, Nandini’s twin sister in Kashi who was forced into prostitution. Ranu falls in love with him. Ranu goes to Delhi to find her twin sister. But, Nandini cares for no one but her family. Sukanta overhears their conversation and decides to start his life again with Ranu.
