Christmas at an old rectory in the countryside – it's Christmas! And the three student brothers, "Gamle", "Corpus Juris" and Nicolai, are delighted to receive an invitation to spend Christmas with the priest in Nøddebo. The fact that there are also a couple of young daughters in the rectory naturally makes it all even more enjoyable. It's the first time Nicolai has gone along, so he knows nothing about his older brothers' infatuation with the two girls and falls head over heels for them, assuming that they can't handle his charm either. Things don't quite go his way now, because he finds himself pursued everywhere by the anything but pretty Maldrubine, whose warmest interest is the pleasures of the table.
In the idyllic provincial town of Gammelkøbing lives Emanuel Thomsen, known as Thummelumsen. A young medical student falls in love with her professor. To pay for her studies, she works extra nights and performs as a popular singer at a dance restaurant. But she is fired because of an unpleasant guest and takes a job as a maid. The professor appears in the family and a carousel of lies takes off.
Wholesaler Paavo Markkanen faces a month in prison for drunk driving. Accustomed to an easy life, he avoids prison by switching places with his doppelgänger, the vagrant Knip, but ends up having to do strenuous physical training in his place. Thomas becomes a housekeeper, and in his new job he encounters justice. A hotel owner Ravn from Ringkøbing shows up as a guest in the house.
In a small street on the outskirts of town, there are two small shops next to each other: Nummesen's herbalist's shop and Mikkelsen's plumber's shop. Nummesen, the little quirky, friendly herbalist, loves to tease the choleric Mikkelsen. Mikkelsen wants to sell the shop, mostly because the economy is bad after his former Svend, Vilhelm, left it. Now Vilhelm is coming back, to the great joy of Mikkelsen's daughter, who is in love with Vilhelm.
We are in a small Heurigen-Café in Vienna. The young singer Fritz Hertzgruber meets a young Danish writer, Jesper Ellekilde, and the two young people become friends immediately. Fritz has been to Denmark as a "Viennese child" and is now an enthusiastic member of the Viennese children's own club. The following evening, the club's annual draw for a trip to Denmark takes place, and Fritz is the lucky one - albeit by detours. Fritz and Jesper are accompanied to Denmark, where Fritz is very much looking forward to the reunion with his foster parents, the composer Emilius Andersen and his wife. They were the sweetest people to their Viennese child, and their home stands in Fritz's memory as the epitome of idyll and harmony.
A woman is found strangled in her shop. Shortly after, another murder is committed. Perhaps the most terrifying is that the both girls' name is Sonja. The police is convinced it's the same killer and at each scene is heard a woman singing the same song. A song which is soon dubbed the 'murder melody.'
Hilleborg always speaks negatively about her king's marriage to his left hand, Countess Danner. When it is rumored that King Frederik VII and Countess Danner are on their way to Hilleborg and her husband, Niels Parsberg's estate, Hilleborg refuses to be in the living room with the Countess. She switches roles with the housemaid, Lise Sørensen. Lise and Countess Danner quickly become good friends, while Hilleborg's situation worsens when the king decides to spend the night at the estate.
Baldur Justesen is the owner of an ice cream parlor in a Copenhagen suburb. He is a smooth and unassuming man who works hard to keep it running. It is not quite that easy. He has a beautiful, young wife, Sonja, who likes to dress nicely. A man who works all day in an ice cream parlor can also need some diversion, and it is Baldur Justesen's greatest joy to sing in the choir of the "Lyren" singing association.
