Karin, Rudolf and their three children Anna, Sune and Håkan live in the small town of Glimmerdagg. Just like all parents, they try to make the everyday puzzle work, it's just that everyday life is rarely mundane with this family.

A 4 year-old boy stands in awe of a 1,000 year-old Viking boat in a small Norwegian museum and finds within its silent grace an impressionistic sweep of picture and music revealing the rich spirit of Norway and its people.

The story follows Vivian's life from young girl through two marriages, divorce, liberation and class trip, to a baglady.

The director's personal account of a year at Anholt, where he settled down and lived alone in a house: It is my attempt to glimpse an origin and heritage that we all have within us, and on the understanding of which our continued existence depends. It is an investigation of an existence where it is possible to live in an agreement with nature, which makes death present without it becoming frightening, but on the contrary the very prerequisite for a life in peace, security and harmony.
