Biography
Shiguéhiko Hasumi (蓮實重彥, born April 29, 1936) is a film and literary critic and scholar. Former President of the University of Tokyo and recipient of the coveted Yukio Mishima Prize, Hasumi was instrumental in introducing Foucault and Deleuze to Japan in the 1970s before revolutionizing the field of film studies with his writings and fabled lectures at Rikkyo University and later the University of Tokyo. Mentor of Kiyoshi Kurosawa and attributed with having “single-handedly resurrected the status of Ozu” with his 1983 publication on Ozu—considered one of the greatest works ever written on film—Hasumi maintains a towering presence in Japanese intellectual spheres, yielding a prolific body of work across philosphy, film, literature and culture. Hasumi's productive relationships with influential filmmakers including Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Manoel de Oliveira, Theo Angelopoulos, Wim Wenders, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Edward Yang, Pedro Costa, Leos Carax, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Shinji Aoyama, and Ryūsuke Hamaguchi are well documented.

Kijû Yoshida: What Is a Filmmaker?

A short length work by revered critic and theorist Shiguéhiko Hasumi and Shô Miyake, editing together John Ford's thematic system of “throwing” across many of his films. Edited according to which and how much each throwing scene was written about in Hasumi’s John Ford book, this film serves as a definitive version of a collage film initially created by Shinji Aoyama ten years ago. Aoyama, who passed away in March 2022, never saw the completion of his teacher’s book. Recognizing this, Hasumi recommended that Shô Miyake create a definitive version of the collage film, allowing him total creative freedom within a 60-minute runtime limit.

School Days

When director Daniel Schmid grew up, his parents ran a hotel in the Alps, and this singular setting was to influence his film. Rather by coincidence, he came to Berlin in the early 1960s and became part of the new German wave. Schmid worked with, among others, Wenders and Fassbinder, for example, as an actor in Wender’s The American Friend. He met Ingrid Caven, who was to play a diva in several of his films. This is a documentation of a part of modern European film history and a good analysis of artistry and how it corresponds to the individual behind the camera. A wealth of archival footage brings us close to many directors and actors in Schmid’s circle. If you’ve never seen a Daniel Schmid film, you are sure to want to after watching this portrait of his life.
