What do you do when you lose everything and have to start all over again? Ten-year-old Lucas, the middle child of a wealthy family, lives in an expensive neighborhood in a large house, equipped with every luxury. Everything changes completely when Lucas, while searching for his Sinterklaas surprise, finds a large box of unpaid bills. Father Maarten turns out to have enormous financial problems and the family loses everything. The family is evicted and, with the help of their cleaner Nina, finds shelter in an old office building among other new poor people. While father (Jeroen Spitzenberger) and mother (Hadewych Minis) have a hard time with themselves and each other, and big brother Thomas (15) and sister Emma (7) have a terrible time getting used to the new situation, Lucas tries to make the best of it with the highest goal: a Merry Christmas for the whole family.

A young, unhappily married moslim woman works at a call centre, conducting telephone surveys. In this impersonal way, she gets in touch with a single man with a sagging couch and a lack of energy. Due to a barking dog, the telephone contact between this unlikely twosome is intensified and eventually even results in a meeting.

But there is also a different interpretation of the name. "Bars" means "unfriendly" in Dutch and "let" is medieval Dutch for "people". So Barslet means "unfriendly people". The movie stars you see on the screen have once been selected amongst others. The glamor of the premiere is preceded by mug shots, selections, interviews, wining, dining, backstabbing and sex. In the end, everyone gets what they deserve.

Patja desperately runs into the burning house and finds his father unconscious on the kitchen floor. But Lucas' spirit is in the theatre. In a magic train of thought, just before he dies, Lucas directs and acts, assisted by his son, high points and low from his eventful life in the theatre, but also outside. Theatre and reality become intertwined. It slowly becomes clear that Lucas still has something to tell his son.

Jonny, a deadbeat groomer, follows a young woman through the streets of Amsterdam to find out if she is the girl he accidentally killed in a recurring dream, a hallucination or, worse, a memory.

Infant Dédé is lonely at school and is hardly noticed in the busy family where noisy babies rule the roost. When he becomes friends with a dog, he finally feels recognised. From then on, he barks all day long. Nobody understands why. After a while, his father thinks of an inventive way to make contact with his son.
