A young teacher goes to a school for adults. He is younger than many of his students and some of them are starting to miss school.

An ancient blade with diamonds is stolen from the museum where Alexei Gurov works as a restorer. Soon an old icon is stolen from Gurov's apartment. Head of the crime investigation is the police colonel Georgy Arefyev. Everyone knows that Gurov is obsessed with collecting rarities, so suspicion falls heavy on him.

He wants revenge, but, by an evil irony of fate, he must help prepare Brockmann for being cast as a spy in the Soviet Union.

The hero of the film is an ordinary driver of a Moscow taxi, a kind and decent man. Each new working day promises him new meetings, acquaintances — sometimes joyful and pleasant, and sometimes demanding from him severe determination and courage.

The film is about goodness and the strength of the human spirit. "I will discover the homeland of the bird, and people will believe that there is goodness..." wrote the Russian geographer Shavanosov, a dreamer and romantic who paid with his life for discovering the nesting place of the pink gull in the Kolyma region. The protagonist of the film, Alexander Ivakin, dreams of becoming a traveler, finding traces of Shavanosov, continuing his work, and seeing the pink gull.

Music school graduate Lyubochka Vetkina agrees to work temporarily in a kindergarten. After a series of comical adventures that Lyubochka experiences with the kids, she comes to an unexpected decision to dedicate her life to raising other people's children.

Patients of the resuscitator Mikhailov are people who tried to commit suicide. Veronika, a young journalist and sociologist, often visits the hospital where the hero works. Natasha, Mikhailov's wife, guesses that her husband is in love with another woman. She is jealous and increasingly feels her loneliness.
