Following some dodgy dealings, stockbroker Saccard is determined to pull himself out of the gutter and regain is reputation. He is of such ill repute that few, not even his own brother, want anything to do with him. Yet against all the odds he manages to establish a bank. Using straw men and secret knowledge of the course of the war, Saccard inflates the bank’s shares to feed his own sordid desire for speculation. Unfortunately, false success rarely endures. Georg Jacoby’s Jokeren is a light-hearted entertainment picture set during the carnival in Nice, a romantic comedy with a touch of melodrama. A young artist, fatally injured in a car accident, foolishly entrusts a batch of compromising love letters to Borwick, a crooked and unscrupulous lawyer, instructing him to destroy them. Instead, Borwick proceeds to blackmail the woman who sent the letters, Lady Cecilie Powder, married to the straight-arrow Sir Herbert Powder. Lady Cecilie gets help from her spunky younger sister Gill. In turn, she draws in Peter Carstairs, a debonair adventurer known to all as “the Joker” – the card that trumps all others. When the Joker repeatedly foils Borwick’s schemes, the crooked lawyer ups the ante, trying to incriminate his adversary Carstairs and expanding his demands to include marriage to Gill. But as the characters converge at yet another lavish carnival celebration party, it becomes clear that one card does indeed trump all the others: the Joker!
Count de Croisset becomes infatuated with the star dancer Odette Blant. She accepts his offer of marriage, but must promise to abandon the stage forever. She sorely misses performing, however, and when the theatre manager Delage asks her to step in after his star is injured, she agrees. Her husband is at the theatre and recognizes her. Thinking she is having an affair with Delage, he challenges him to a duel. Each duellist must swallow a pill, one of which supposedly contains a deadly poison. This is Delage’s idea, allowing him (with the help of his uncle, the apothecary Michot) to engineer a happy ending for all concerned.

The artistic cyclist Gaumont, his girlfriend Baptista, and their partner Rosa arrive in town with their travelling circus. The two of them grow closer in secret, but the clown Pierre, who has set his sights on Baptista, gossips about the lovebirds for his own gain, thus igniting a fatal thirst for revenge in the betrayed. At full speed on the ice, the young scultptor and eager skater Erik Elmer meets a charming young lady, Ethel, who quite literally sweeps him off his feet. She is being deceived by her lawyer, who manages the inheritance from her father in America. The deceitful lawyer courts Ethel, who is soon to inherit her wealthy father’s fortune. The attic of a city house is the home to a colony of artists. Among them is a writer, whose corpus is larger than her output. We also meet a hard-of-hearing poet who can still hear the grass growing. There's a painter, a sculptor and more. All are penniless - hoping that one day they will experience their breakthrough. "The Seventh Heaven", as the corridor is called, also houses two prominent residents, Fyrtårnet and Bivognen. They have set up a small diner and engage lively with the artist from the colony.
The two friends, Fy and Bi, come wandering along the country road as so many times before without a destination and - without food. Hunger torments them, and they stop with wide eyes at a bakery truck, whose back door is open and opens the view to sumptuous trays of pastries and mayor's bars. However, they get a long nose and wander on to an old castle, where they seek accommodation for the night. In the castle cellar they open a book - and immediately they are back in the exciting events and deadly battles of the 15th century. And again we are back in the castle cellar, where Fy now with a bang closes the dusty, old book, and the two set out on the country road again.
When head clerk Wange sets out to propose to the love of his life, Julie, he is rejected on the grounds that he is too staid and earthbound for her. A particularly pretentious and conceited poet is much more to her liking. Wange must find a way to prove to Julie that he is truly adventurous and romantic. Along the way, Peter Basse learns that the Dowager Baroness may be going crazy. In any case, she has made the acquaintance of two spiritualists.

Christensen is the caretaker of a property in the inner city. He is a bachelor and has taken in a poor little girl. The house is inhabited by ordinary people, and the friendly caretaker is like a father to them. Up in the attic lives a whole colony of young artists: actors, dancers, writers and composers. They are poor, but they hold the flag high. They are confident that one day they will have their big breakthrough, and they are working diligently on a revue that their leader, a young musician and composer, has written.
We are in a big city in a country that differs from our own in many ways, among other things in that the people there are so noble and good that the police have no business at all. There are no criminals. The prisons are empty. The poor young man Felix is trying to get behind bars because he knows that he will then have access to the lovely Christmas geese.
FRAGMENT | The ageing Miss Tillesen runs a boarding house, but her temper will soon run it to the ground. Tillesen’s young niece, Anna, decides to attract new boarders with a pretentious advertisement. Soon enough there’s bite from four would-be gentlemen, all of whom confuse Anna to be the boarding house’s landlady.
