A judge sees his illegitimate daughter face trial for infanticide. He's certain that she will receive the death sentence.

On New Year's Eve, the convicted murderer, Strong Henry, escapes from prison and collects his son from the orphanage. When he breaks into a local manor to get some milk for his child, he is surprised by a young woman, Eva. Out of pity, she decides to help the stranger, but unfortunately some of the manor's other occupants wake up and call the police. Fourteen years later, Henry is released from prison. Convinced that Eva betrayed him, he sets out to take revenge and find his son.

It is apparently an unusually cunning gang and the police are powerless. The Madsens and the Sørensens are eagerly awaiting a visit from their rich uncle Bims from America. As the ship docks, the two couples stand ready like drooling dogs about to chow down. However, the four are in for a sore disappointment: the gifts brought along by their uncle turn out to be very modest in scope. Enraged, the Sørensens destroy their gifts and mock the uncle by throwing cream puffs at his portrait in their living room. Mr Madsen wastes no time in getting rid of the cheap pearl necklace his wife has received. But the necklace keeps coming back in mysterious ways – which proves very fortuitous for them. Three simple-minded fisherman brothers enjoy life. They get help from the young girl Sus, who manages the house and helps on the fishing boat. When the brothers get a good offer to borrow money for a hotel, they immediately take it. However, there is the shady contractor Gravenkop from whom they borrow the money. At the same time, people are smuggling into the city; cheap booze is in circulation. Sus, together with his friend Stille, tries to solve the crime.

Joe, a circus clown, has a chance meeting with a famous French fashion designer, who – enthralled by Joe’s artistic talent – gets him a job in Paris. Doctor Thaw cheats on his wife, Rose, with her friend, Nina. One evening, while he’s out enjoying his secret happiness, Rose is murdered by a burglar, and he finds her limp and cold body in their marital bed the next morning. Out of respect for Nina, he refuses to say where he was at the time of the murder and ends up being charged with the murder of his wife. 12 years will have to pass before they meet again. Nina turns in a wanted criminal, Carl Weldon, to get the reward and save her ailing mother, who sadly expires before Nina has time to return. Visiting his father in jail, Weldon’s son Victor learns that his father is innocent of the murder for which he has been convicted. Victor rages at the anonymous informer but cannot prove his father’s innocence. A few years later, Nina and Victor accidentally meet, and love blossoms between them. But Nina is racked by guilt.
