The Royal privileged ferry inn in Hørby is owned and operated by the two good friends Erik Hansen and Lars Tofte. In addition to the inn they own the small ferry, which keeps them in touch with the mainland.

Susanne is going to the countryside to visit Ditmar. Ditmar has been abroad for over a year, and in the meantime, Susanne has given birth to Lulu without Ditmar's knowledge. Susanne's good friend and nanny, Andreas, accompanies her to the estate. Andreas and Lulu are assumed to be the butler and his daughter. Andreas agrees to the idea so that he can keep an eye on Susanne. However, Andreas falls in love with the daughter of the house, who believes he has a wife. At the same time, Susanne tries to tell Ditmar that Lulu is their child.

Lykke Jeppsen is beautiful and young, but she is best served by not being much else. She certainly shouldn't set her sights on driving a car, because no woman in her family has been allowed to do so since Lykke's mother had a terrible accident in a car from another era. But Lykke secretly takes driving lessons, and one day she has to pass the test: Who is the best driver?

Like John's wife Irene, she falls in love with flight lieutenant Harry, while her father Zeus looks on disapprovingly and decides to intervene. Meanwhile, the premiere of the operetta is fast approaching.
