Lieutenant Captains Pyotr Orlov and Ivan Muravyov have been serving on the Slavyanka submarine for a long time. The next trip to the sea is a planned combat exercise. But no one assumes that a catastrophe will happen this time — the waves from the training explosions will disturb the "sleeping" naval mine since the Second World War.

The film begins in the 1980s Soviet Union. Two best friends, Orlov and Muravyev, are serving at the Black Sea Navy Base in Sevastopol, Crimea. Both fall in love with one beautiful girl Nelly, and their friendship suffers a first blow. Because she picks Muravyev, his friend Orlov struggles with an inferiority complex and becomes a secretive alcoholic. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, both friends are transferred to the Northern Fleet on the Polar Ocean. One day their sub is performing a routine training. A disturbed WWII mine slowly moves on a collision course with the sub. A mighty blast knocks down everyone inside the wrecked sub, 72 meters below the sea level. Then ensues a nerve-racking struggle for survival.

A former policeman Pozhivaev once notices a leaflet on a post - "A dog has disappeared ...". After a couple of meters, he stumbles upon another ad - about finding a dog. It turns out that it was about the same dog. Pozhivaev decides to help deliver the dog to the owner, who turns out to be his neighbor... So the hero comes up with the idea to create a Service for the search and rescue of pets. It includes a self-taught mechanic Vitya Burkin, an avid computer scientist Garik and Mikhalych, a young authority on the bird market...
