Fermin Muguruza

New York City, October 10, 1965. A group of wooden giant figures from Pamplona, representing Basque culture and traditions, parade down the street; but the local authorities have not allowed the appearance of all of them: due to the racial prejudices that persist in many sectors of society, the participation of two black giants has been banned.

An attempt to create a bridge between the different political positions that coexist, sometimes violently, in the Basque Country, in northern Spain.

Ainhoa is born by chance in La Paz (Bolivia); but she grows up in Cuba and, at the age of 21, in 1988, she travels to the Basque Country (Spain) to discover the land of Manex, her father. In the midst of political struggle, she meets Josune, a committed journalist, and her group of friends.

A documentary film about the origins of the Basque trikitixa. It reflects how the small accordion brought by one of the Italian workers who came to build the Madrid-Paris railway tunnels in 1859, starting from Zumarraga, has become a symbol of contemporary Basque music.

In his new documentary the musician Fermin Muguruza follows path Zuloak rock band, composed entirely of women, to demand also providing other important musical artists.

Drawn by its charm, Fermin Muguruza has gone to The Big Easy to record an album, Irun Meets New Orleans—where he adapts eight songs from his career to New Orleans sounds and performs two classics from the city—and to make a documentary, Nola?, about the situation ten years after Katrina. All this, surrounded by the cream of the local scene: from the historic Preservation Hall Jazz Band to bounce rapper Katey Red, alongside collaborators from Galactic, Dr. John, and Trombone Shorty.

The journey starts with footage of Marcel Khalife reading at Mahmoud Darwish's funeral, and the spirit of the late, great poet pervades the film. The screening will be followed by a live jam, featuring director Fermin Muguruza alongside some of the key artistes from the film.

Police control and the closure of certain crossings on the Bidasoa river, natural border of the Pyrenées-Atlantiques Department, imposed by France in summer 2018 to prevent the entrance of immigrants on their way to other European countries, caused 10 deaths in a single year. Seven people died from April 2021, drowned in the waters of the River Bidasoa between Irun and Hendaia, while another three lost their lives in October 2021, hit by a train in Ziburu. This documentary, as well as putting a voice and face to several of the activists who work on either side of the river, as representatives of the Harrera Sarea (Reception Network) and Bidasoa Etorkinekin (The Bidasoa with Migrants) associations, also recalls those who lost their lives, giving them a name and an age, following their journey and their dreams, discovering the history and the people behind the cold figures of the deceased, giving the tragedy a more human aspect.
