The Panther Claw organization is driven by a relentless pursuit of wealth, using any means necessary to achieve their goals. However, their plans start to unravel thanks to the unexpected interference of a seemingly ordinary girl. This girl, who initially encounters Panther Claw by chance, turns out to be Kisaragi Honey, the ‘daughter’ of the brilliant cyberneticist Dr. Kisaragi Koshirou. Recognizing her value, Panther Claw’s four members race to capture Cutie Honey. Kisaragi Honey, also known as Cutie Honey, is not alone in her fight. This story is based on the novel "Jo no mai" by Tomiko Miyao which is based on the life of painter Shōen Uemura (1875–1949), the first woman to be awarded the Order of Culture. The title refers to the masterpiece bijinga ("picture of a beautiful woman") that Uemura painted at the age of 61. The main character, Tsuya Shimamura, is born in Kyoto as the second daughter of a tea trader who dies before her birth. Tsuya, who loves painting more than anything and is hopeless at housework, attends art school and at age 15 receives the name Shōsui (from the characters for "pine" and "green") from her teacher. The crown prince of England purchases one of her works, propelling her to fame overnight. The novel portrays the remainder of her stormy life, during which she is impregnated by her teacher and raises a fatherless child; through it all she devotes herself to her painting, undaunted.

The story follows Yonemura Hiroko, a bank clerk reeling from the betrayal of her lover, who is engaged to another woman. After a public outburst, Hiroko’s senior Tsuchiya Taeko steps in at the request of the branch manager, first by taking her to dinner and offering her to transfer to the better branch, and later by involving her in a new acquaintance whom they accidentally met in a peculiar way. That acquaintance turns out to be Sekimoto Shinsaku, a former professional baseball player struggling with his past and lack of confidence. Together, Hiroko, Tsuchiya, and Sekimoto invest in revamping a failing coffee shop called “River”, transforming it into "Terrace". As they struggle through setbacks and rebuild the shop, each of them slowly overcomes their emotional scars while pursuing their dream.
