The story of Doctor Čeněk Dobešek - a decent, kind man who seems almost out of place in today’s world. Though he’s a conscientious physician, he hasn’t learned to exploit his calling for personal gain the way many of his former classmates or hospital colleagues do. Happily settled in a modest two-room apartment with his lovely wife Zuzana and his dreadful mother-in-law Marie Košvancová, Čeněk cheerfully drops everything at any hour to answer the doorbell and tend to whoever needs him. His humble generosity scandalizes Marie, who’d much rather have a “real” Doctor as a son-in-law: someone famous, wealthy, and who never works for free, unlike Čeněk.

The story of František, a selfish yet loving man who made his living as a musician on ocean cruise ships. He gradually became estranged from his family and ended up alone. On the advice of friends, he sets out to find his daughter in the village of Svatá Helena, a thousand kilometers away in the Romanian Banat region. Meeting people who live in harmony with God and nature and searching for his daughter, who has not been in touch, eventually reconciles František with the idea that he fears so much with advancing age: that he will live out his life in exile and solitude. However, things take an unexpected turn...
The last drop for Jan's resolution is the voluntary death of his father-in-law, whose strength and patience ran dry. Grandma made decisions about Grandpa's life, old age as well as the funeral. Jan is sure that he and his wife Olga are on the same route. He recalls his past life when he used to have his own will and dreams and he wants to live again with dignity and freedom. He longs to control his own life again. And his solution is escape from the present life. In this movie we watch, in parallel ,the fates of Jan's married daughters Olinka and Alenka and his sons-in-law Erik and Pepík.
It was a fateful August, and devastating floods ravaged Bohemia. Mrs. Gabriela lived alone in a spacious apartment near Prague. Perhaps she just wanted to help, or perhaps she wanted something more: either way, she called the news station to offer accommodation to an elderly disabled woman. The next day, Mrs. Věra arrived with only a bag of personal belongings that she had managed to salvage from her flooded apartment in Karlín. But perhaps this woman was looking for something more than just a roof over her head. As it gradually became clear, everything was a little different than it seemed. In any case, this situation offered both women a chance to resolve their lives, which were already drawing to a close...
