Rasmus' son Erik graduates from medical school and returns to the village. While Rasmus and Dr. Bergman become enemies, Erik falls in love with Dr. Bergman's daughter Birgit.

Bertil Bergencrantz dislikes that his daughter Ann-Margret falls in love with the student Torsten. To prevent their romance, he tries to marry the daughter with the young Count Cronhielm. A 40-minute fragment survives.

Munthe has become a rich farmer through his own work and has gained some influence in the local community. He is strongly opposed to the immigration of east European farm labour from Galicia who, he claims, makes life difficult for the locals.
