Angry Young Men is the story of Salim-Javed, legendary screenwriters of 1970s Hindi cinema. Together, they created the archetype of the Angry Young Man - a brooding anti-hero who captured the imagination of an entire nation with his rage, defiance, and quest for social justice. Like the character they created, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, two outsiders to the Hindi film industry, defied all odds, questioning the position of writers and demanding recognition as much as the reigning stars of that time. Their break-up made headlines for many years and Indian cinema never saw a cultural collaboration as powerful again. This is a personal and candid account of their lives, their writing and their legacy.

Widower Rai Bahadur Pratap Singh is disappointed when he wants to marry someone poor. Pratap instructs him to forget about his love-life, his son refuses, and as a result Pratap asks him to leave the house. Years later, Pratap receives a letter in the mail, informing him that his son is dead, and that his widowed daughter-in-law and her son, Guddu, are on their way to live with him. He is delighted, and sends Prem, his nephew to receive, however, both mother and son do not arrive and are believed to be missing. Rai Bahadur subsequently finds out that his daughter-in-law is dead, and Guddu is living in a slum with a thief and drunk, Shankar. With the help of the courts and the police, Pratap manages to bring Guddu to his home. This is where Pratap will find out that money and power will not buy him his grandson's love, he will also find out that his daughter-in-law did not die a normal death, but was killed.

Karan is a thief who is good at heart and tries to keep Rattan, a gangster, from causing trouble. Thereafter, his life changes when he meets his estranged family and falls in love with Madhu.

Arjun Yadav return from the city after completing his studies to get settled in his village with his family consisting of his mother Devi Chaudaran, his older brother Amrit and sister. Arjun finds out that Amrit and Thakur Bhanwar Singh does not get along quiet well and attempts to be a peace-maker between the two. One day situation takes a turn for the worse when Amrit is killed, Devi Chaudaran loses her senses, Arjun's sister is raped and he himself is beaten and tied to a tree. Arjun is then rescued by some sympathetic villagers and run off with his childhood friend Makan Malla in the deep ravines only to turn an outlaw whose only motive is to avenge the killings of his family members.

Vijay is in love with Suman but she gets married to another man and eventually, he too marries another woman. Years later, their children happen to fall in love with each other.
