During the Spanish Civil War, a command takes the night to reach an advanced position, surrounded by the enemy, to protect the ford of a river. The next day, soldiers from both sides arrange a truce for fishing trouts and exchange cans and cigarettes. But foreign forces relieve the besiegers during the night and kill an unsuspecting soldier who was waving to return to fishing. While the position is strengthened, a soldier escapes to the nearby village to see his family.

Two adventurers without economic resources create an amateur theater company and want to succeed, posing as aristocrats. The project aims to fill the theater with their performances and, thus, to satisfy their debts.

The bullfight is about to begin. On the bill are announced the toreros Ricardo Puente, Juan Carmona and Rondeño II, who will take the alternative. Puente is an old bullfighter, famous in earlier times, who, now bitter and full of resentment, lives with Paloma, a woman who is not resigned to continue being the lover of a man who has fallen into oblivion. Carmona, the fashionable bullfighter, has an important contract to fight in America, but his wife Isabel wants him to reject the offer. Anamaría, Carmona's sister, hopes that her brother will approve her relationship with Rondeño II; but Carmona opposes because he considers him a bad bullfighter. In a fourth, hopeful and exciting plot, a young amateur bullfighter has a plan to sneak into the ring and fight a bull, hoping for public acclaim for his feat of bravery.
Five men commit a robbery and flee each one for his side. Later they meet in a place to distribute the millions. While they wait for Juan, who is the one who takes the booty, each of them is imagining what it is going to do with his part. But the wait is doing long billiard cue to him and they are becoming nervous thinking that his companion will never appear, remembering they knew since him and since the things were happening up to the current moment.

During three months, they will have a course of military training and will live in the same tent at Camp Robledo. The different personalities and concerns of young people: the serious Eduardo, the glutton Ruiz, the philosopher Ortiguesa, the athletic Colmero, the irreverent Fresneda ... have the common denominator of enthusiasm for the future.
