Originally a collection of clips from the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, Death was created as a precursor to the re-worked ending of the series. Rebirth was intended as that re-worked ending, but after production overruns Rebirth became only the first half of the first part of The End of Evangelion, with some minor differences.

After realizing the value of life and the importance of his own allies, Makoto finally got his smile back. He finds himself learning more about those comrades and getting closer to them. Makoto wishes that everything will continue just as they are. However, little by little, the pieces and people in Makoto's new, happy life begin to fall apart.

In the first part, Shizune Seo, who finds her life too predictable due to her precognition, and Mitsuru‎ Kamekura, who uses his precognition to be a professional bomber, meet Mikiya and Shiki, respectively, and their futures begin to change.
