Alors qu'ils sont en vacances dans le Sud-Ouest, Rae découvre que son homme Michael a dépensé l'argent de leur maison pour une voiture classique, alors elle l'abandonne, faisant du stop à Las Vegas pour un vol de retour. Deux décollent avec l'argent échouant le troisième, avec une caisse mystérieuse, juste au moment où les flics arrivent. Le voleur prend le magasin en otage. Alors que des flics incompétents font appel à une équipe SWAT et tentent un sauvetage à la sauvette, Michael doit garder le voleur calme, découvrir ce qu'il y a dans la caisse, aider les négociations et revenir à Rae. Le syndrome de Stockholm affirme son effet.

Dick Harper, cadre supérieur de l'industrie spatiale est brutalement licencié.
