Antonio (Totò), ancien acteur de variétés, garde sa fille dans un excellent internat en organisant de petites escroqueries avec son ami et collègue Felice (Taranto). De bonne humeur, l'inspecteur Malvasia (Calindri) le persécute. Lorsque leurs enfants respectifs sans méfiance tombent amoureux, les deux pères font la paix.

Parabole philosophique ou un berger ayant perdu son troupeau, au bout du rouleau, rencontre un certain Joseph qui lui propose de garder un enfant qui n'est autre que Jesus. Cet enfant ne dort jamais la nuit. Le berger va lui raconter des histoires melangeant mythe et realite.

Sous la forme de 20 sketches, Les monstres met en scène les « petites monstruosités » quotidiennes, les mesquineries et mensonges des stéréotypes italiens des années 1960. La charge critique de cette comédie italienne est assez forte et n’épargne rien ou personne, en particulier les institutions et pouvoirs comme le gouvernement (8), l’église (19), la justice (10) ou la télévision (18) à travers leurs représentants respectifs.

Tony Gasparini confie à son ami et docteur, le professeur Castellani, ses ennuis intimes. Celui-ci estime que le meilleur remède est de conduire son ami à une party. Pour ce faire, il n'hésite même pas à le jeter dans les bras de sa femme Noemi. Mais voici que le plus grand colporteur de ragots de Trévise, Scarabello, apprend à Castellani qu'en réalité l'infirmité prétendue de Gasparini n'est pour lui qu'un alibi opportun...

Dans cette satire inspirée de L’Inspecteur général de Nicolas Gogol et transportée dans l’Italie de l’époque fasciste, la visite (supposée) incognito d’un fonctionnaire fasciste romain dans une petite ville de campagne ébranle profondément la classe dirigeante et son manque d’intégrité.

Une comédie politique satirique et acide divisée en épisodes. Le film est co-réalisé par Mario Monicelli, Ettore Scola, Nanni Loy, Luigi Magni. Les épisodes dressent un portrait critique de la société italienne, décrivant les italiens comme des personnes paresseuses, désorganisées et incompétentes. La critique devient de plus en plus acerbe au fil des épisodes.

Ernesto and Filippo, two high school teachers, couldn’t be more different: Filippo is a cheerful liberal who is constantly online.
