Two silent movie actors escape from their film. Forced to find a way to survive in the real world, they will only cause troubles to the people they will meet along the way.

A combination of a satire on war and a comedy with war as the background. It tells of the ordinary people living on a Naples sidestreet, from 1940 to 1950 under the dominance of the Fascists, the Nazis and then the Allies occupation forces. Primary among the citizens is Gennaro Iovine (Eduard De Filippo)who has a penchant for innocently getting into trouble, and his friend Pasquale (Toto.) The latter is a rail-sweeper who becomes a professional stand-in...a corpse used to conceal contraband...serving jail time for those who don't care to spend the time to do the time...a substitute at a political rally when violence threatens the scheduled speaker

Autour de la table se retrouvent Silvia, fille de la comtesse, son mari Ernesto, Lauretta, maîtresse d'Ernesto, et un certain Biagio Tanzarella. Ce dernier, qui se fait passer pour le médecin particulier du Duce, tente à ce titre de faire chanter Ernesto. IL serait en effet du plus mauvais effet que la liaison du comte avec Lauretta devienne publique...

Le malchanceux Fantozzi apprend que sa fille est enceinte. S'ensuit alors une série de mésaventures, dont une opération imprévue.

Le marquis Onofrio del Grillo est un noble romain du début du XIXe siècle, proche du pape Pie VII en tant que sediaro pontificio (porteur de la sedia gestatoria), tout en étant un ami des troupes d’occupation napoléoniennes de la ville de Rome. Amoral et libertin, il trompe son ennui en faisant de féroces plaisanteries aux dépens de son entourage. C’est ainsi qu’il introduit son sosie, charbonnier de son état, à sa place dans le palais familial, et ce, au grand dam de sa mère, bigote invétérée. Mais, ses plaisanteries pourraient bien se retourner contre leur auteur.

Tony Gasparini confie à son ami et docteur, le professeur Castellani, ses ennuis intimes. Celui-ci estime que le meilleur remède est de conduire son ami à une party. Pour ce faire, il n'hésite même pas à le jeter dans les bras de sa femme Noemi. Mais voici que le plus grand colporteur de ragots de Trévise, Scarabello, apprend à Castellani qu'en réalité l'infirmité prétendue de Gasparini n'est pour lui qu'un alibi opportun...
